Hard, cold stone dug into her back, pinching Harlow’s armor painfully against her skin. The soldier, pinning her with enough force to crush bones, looked over his shoulder at Harlow’s misfortune.

She stared down the blade of the Ivy’s Gate captain, who laughed as the soldier pressed harder and Harlow cried out.

“You were getting annoying,” he told her, motioning for the soldier to change positions. The shield moved slightly, providing a piece of Harlow’s chest for the captain to stab.

She was about to die and all Harlow could think to do was close her eyes.

Harlow waited for an eternity, until she realized that, since the last time a sword was aimed at her, the time alloted for stabbing had increased dramatically.

Opening her eyes, she let out a shaky, relieved breath.

Valda had taken care of the captain and now had him on the ground, a knee buried in his gut.

The soldier holding her let her drop like a stone, running as the captain was swiftly killed. Harlow, catching her breath, smiled.

It took a little under a minute, however, to understand that something was wrong. The captain was dead—she was sure of that. But Valda was still on top of him.

Her axe came down again, open flesh squelching as metal caught in sinew and bone. roaring like a woman possessed, she ripped her arms upwards, sending the blended mixture of blood and viscera flying.

Some splattered Harlow’s face as she watched in horror.

Again. Again. Again.

What at first had been measured, accurate blows became wild and violent and hysterical. As she raged, Valda didn’t even bother to lift her axe all the way before slamming it down again.

The captain’s body flapped around like a ragdoll, helpless to the overkill inflicted upon it. Inevitably, part of him was split; Valda let the blade bury into dirt and didn’t even blink at the extra effort it took to tear it out.

“Valda,” Harlow attempted, her voice shaking. “He’s dead—”

How could she not be aware of that?

But the queen continued, taking the body past unrecognizable.

Finally finding her voice, Harlow screamed.

“Valda!” She tried to pry at the other’s arm, but it was immovable. She had to drop out of the way as the axe was raised again. “Valda! He’s dead! Leave him! Can’t you see—”

Valda let out a furious scream. Blood rained down her face, chest, and arms. Crying, Harlow looked around, desperate for help.

Cyrene became clumsy, letting her sword carry her arms through a strike instead of the other way around. Stumbling, she barely staved off another opponent. Fallon, dodging strikes, raced around trying to retrieve some arrows. Their mouth was wide open, scraping oxygen from the air as they pushed themselves to their limit.

Some of the soldiers took notice of Harlow and Valda. Screaming bereavement for their captain, a group shed from Cyrene and Fallon and set their murderous eyes on Valda.

“Snap out of it!” Harlow screamed at her. She clawed at the other’s back to no avail. Valda was lost. Harlow couldn’t even see the forest green of her eyes.
